The TS-480 is available in two forms The TS480SAT 100W version fitted with an internal automatic ATU. and the TS-480HX, the 200W version without the ATU
The radio is aimed at the HF+6m mobile market but also with an eye for base station role. It has followed the route of the TS-570 for its IF filters, and in fact the same options are available.
AF digital signal processing for both Tx and RX is in the hands of a 16-bit digital signal processor which offers double precision arithmetic operations (equivalent to 32-bit processing)- It has three settings for the Digital Noise Limiter (DNL) and is particularly effective in removing pulse noises that cannot be eliminated with conventional analogue circuitry.
The TX/RX equaliser offers a variety of settings and can be reconfigured using the ARCP-480 control program which is freely available through the Kenwood website
Beat Cancel (BC1 & BC2) and Noise Reduction (NR1 & NR2) are also controlled through the DSP chip
Speech Processing is available for SSB, FM and AM transmissions and the TX audio can be ad)usted to suit by switching between two passband settings (500-2500Hz and the default 300-2700Hz).
The TS-480SAT with 100W RF power has a built-in automatic ATU. which covers the amateur bands 1.8 to 54MHz and has presets for quick band changes. The TS-480SAT's power requirements are fairly conventional and can be run from a single 22
5A power supply or from 12V car/leisure battery.
The TS-480HX with 200W RF power has a different power requirement in that the rig can be run from two 22 5A power supplies or from a single 41A power source.
Both models have built-in electronic keyer with reverse CW, IF shift, VOX, RF compression. alphanumeric memory storage, RS-232C serial port, convenient carrying bracket and provision for two antennas.
